After a week of torrential drought breaking rain, Long Reef Golf Club produced a glorious day for Empower Golf’s second annual NSW Charity Golf Day. 80 golfers were treated to an afternoon of fabulous sunshine, playful banter and cheeky midweek golf. This was closely followed by a sumptuous dinner and lively charity auction.
Over dinner, Australia’s favourite TV vet Dr Chris Brown regaled the guests with hilarious tales of travelling a quadriplegic (Empower Golf’s CEO James Gribble) to far flung places. Apparently, in Chernobyl, when questioning about radiation at 25 times the recommended levels, tour guides simply stated, “It’s okay, he’s in a wheelchair”. . . .
Chester Bendall, one of Empower Golf’s regular ParaGolfing players, shared his personal insights of the power of golf to transform lives. Despite his protests that his stand up comedy career was over, the laughter of the audience would suggest otherwise.
Empower Golf is grateful to Rod Tubbs who returned to run the evening’s charity auction. There were unconfirmed reports that the laughter from the audience could be heard at Empower Golf Hubs around the country. More importantly, he converted the generosity of our prize sponsors into valuable funds to continue the expansion of disability golf in Australia.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to the individual and corporate sponsors for their generosity and support. Particular thanks must go to Titleist who donated a number of prizes, including caps signed by Tour players Jordan Speith and Lee Westwood.
