Tom Hughson – WA Representative

Congratulations to Empower Golf’s Tom Hughson for winning the Outstanding Game Development Award at the WA Golf Industry Awards on 10 March 2018.

This is fitting recognition for all the hard work Tom and Empower Golf have been doing to develop inclusive golf in Western Australia. Well Done!

Tom knew that Golf was going to play a major part in his life from the first time he picked up a club at the age of 16. Little did he know it would turn into a passion and also the thing that saved his life.

Tom has battled the demons of mental illness. Through Golf and the unique aspects of the game (Getting exercise, Being outdoors, Competition, Socialising, Goal/Target setting), he found an outlet that created the recovery and the person he is today. Tom has been a Media Ambassador for Beyondblue for the past 2 years and as a public speaker, shares his lived experience with the goal of raising awareness of mental illness.

Tom joined the Empower Golf Australia team to share his dream of “using golf as the core principal to give everyone a better life” through fighting the battle to break the stigma associated with mental illness and disabilities. He lives first hand how it helped him and now is on a mission to help others and what better way than through golf.

In his spare time Tom enjoys being involved in all types of sports (including recent forays into the world of wheelchair basketball), watching the All Blacks create world domination and also traveling to new countries, maybe attempting new and outrageous challenges. Tom completed the first ever Golf Challenge of its kind in February 2016 by hitting 100 golf balls an hour for 12 continuous hours, on a purpose made 142m par three, all to raise funds and awareness for mental illness. And yes, there was one hole in one!
